Achieving a good marriage is very hard work. Sometimes
it is necessary to seek help for conflict resolution to
move beyond either a cold or hot war. It is important
to work with a marriage therapist who believes that
every relationship has the potential for improvement.

I approach counseling as a
spiritual, emotional, and psychological tool useful to promote
healing in the areas of interpersonal emotions, mental health,
and relationships. One goal of the counseling I will provide is
to strengthen your own healing and recovery process in all areas
of your life. I believe an important part of counseling is for
the counselor to provide guidance and education about the
healthy use of relationships and resources. As change occurs in
the above areas, people find that they are increasing their
ability to meet their needs with a reduced need to use a
counselor. At this point, the role of the counselor continues
to be that of a cheerleader and mentor with the goal of
finalizing the success of the counselee.
I have a broad range of
counseling experience over 14+ years, and am a Licensed Master's
level Social Worker. I have experience in the areas of child
and adolescent therapy, family therapy, and adult therapy. I
have experience providing counseling to individuals and families
in the areas of recovery from abuse,
second-stage recovery from addictions, eating disorders, issues
with employment, marital issues, medical and mental health
issues, parenting issues for children with behavioral and
emotional problems, spiritual issues, and grief and loss issues.
I realize that it may be
difficult to disclose information that is personal to a
counselor. I believe that we become healthier individually as
we take the risk to become more "real" and honest about who we
are, where we have come from, and where we are going. I
therefore believe that as you enter a counseling relationship,
as you take the risk to share and become more real, you will
find more "wholeness". This wholeness will occur in many areas
of your life, including: interpersonally,
mentally, spiritually, and in your relationships. I count it a
privilege to be a part of this process

Kathy
has her Master’s of Education as a Special Ed Teacher and
her Master’s of Science degree in Marriage and Family
Therapy from Portland State University. She has a wealth of
experience teaching and counseling. She is particularly
interested in working with individuals, couples, and
families who struggle with the impact of trauma in
relationships. I take a “Structural Family System” approach
in working with clients in order to help identify what might
be keeping them “stuck”, thus preventing them from
functioning at an optimal level. My theoretical orientation
stems from Control Mastery Theory, which asserts that all
individuals have a desire to reach their potential. It is
often their beliefs, rooted in their family of origin, that
present obstacles in reaching their goals. My goal as a
therapist is to facilitate self understanding and improve
the process of reaching one’s full potential. Kathy
specializes in:
Family/Couple Therapy; Individual Therapy; Abuse/Trauma issues;
Codependency; Play/Sand Tray Therapy; Parenting; Family
Divorce Mediation Counseling; Spiritual Awareness; and
Psychosocial Aspect of Disabilities.
